Know when to hold your tongue…

Holding your tongue can be about anything that one says. Whether it is saying bad things or even allowing oneself to sing those bad songs out there. That doesn’t mean you are the worst person for doing those things, because believe me, we’ve all made mistakes. The Book of James says, ” The tongue is harder to tame than any wild creature in the world.” Did you know that we are WICKED when we use CORRUPT words, but when we speak GODLY words we are HELPFUL. My mom has a poster in our “classroom” and it says,

Before you speak, THINK.

T- is it TRUE?

H- is it HELPFUL?

I- is it INSPIRING?

N- is it Necessary?

K- is it KIND?

That is our motto and I think it resembles to my every day life and probably yours too. God says not to use foul or abusive language, but to let everything we say be good and helpful. Tips to tame your tongue-

  1. When gossip starts, zip it up.

I am one who will not gossip about others, but also, stops the gossip if it’s going on. I’m sure many of us have talked about people behind their backs at one time or another. You probably feel bad about gossiping after you do it too. There’s a reason for that. The Lord says to treat others how you would want to be treated. So, ask Him to help you speak life about others and if you make a mistake & do talk badly about someone just tell the Lord that you are sorry and ask for forgiveness. I can assure you 100% that He will. He loves us and will do ANYTHING for us all. I don’t know who you are, but please always remember that God loves you with all of His heart, with all of His soul, and with all of His mind.

2. Pray for your enemies.

There is a saying that says “sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt you.” Let me just tell you straight up that is absolutely NOT TRUE. Some of you may be wondering why in the world would I pray for my enemies? The reason is, the people you don’t like, need the most prayer. Not to mention, if you pray for those who have wronged you, you are freeing yourself of any resentment, anger, or hurt they have caused you. I’m not saying that others don’t need prayer, but that if you don’t like someone, you need to learn to love them and see them through God’s eyes. God sees everything in this universe and has a totally different perspective. He sees the troubled and cares for them. 1 Peter 5:7 states, “Cast all of your anxieties on Him and He will care for you.” That is TRUE. God will always be there for you by your side every step of the way. To make sure that He is there with you,  you can say, “God I have sinned and I am so sorry. I need you, I want you in my life. I believe you sent your son to die on the cross to save us from our sins and then three days later, He later rose from the dead. Please come into my life. I love you. Amen”

Once you say that, you are reborn in Christ and you have a guarantee of going to Heaven to meet our Lord someday! How amazing is that? I know that learning to hold your tongue will seem IMPOSSIBLE, but with God all things are POSSIBLE.

Verse of the week:

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

-Ephesians 4:29

Here is a song that they always play in church and gets me every time:
