We are Grass and Flowers

Well, it is only eight days until Christmas and only five days until the first day of winter. I know the holidays are chaotic, but that is just a part of the Christmas spirit! Anyhow, I am here today to talk about flowers. I know it isn’t spring, but there are plenty of winter flowers. I am not going to be naming a “bunch of different flowers”, but instead, will be unveiling the hidden message inside of flowers.

It takes a lot to keep a flower alive. It needs sunlight, water, oxygen, nutrients from soil, etc. Just like flowers, we need sunlight, water, and oxygen too! We actually do need plants just like flowers; they help provide oxygen in the atmosphere. Flowers also have many layers, just like us. Not just on the inside, but on the outside too. We have many different characteristics and feelings, thoughts and actions. I consider these our layers. We all have qualities that are different than the next. Flowers can be the same, but there are different qualities in each and every one. For instance, one may have more of a vivid hue than another or have more pollen. No matter what the difference may be, they are all unique. Different people admire various flowers. We are all so individually unique and this is a good thing! It is our layers that have an effect on those around us. All of your characteristics and feelings, thoughts and actions, are what make you, YOU! Never doubt for even a moment that you are not special because you most certainly are!

Deuteronomy 14:1-2 says, “You are the children of the Lord your God. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.” You, every one of you, are truly so special and no matter what anyone says, know that God has always loved you and always will. You are so uniquely perfect in His eyes. He created you and you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

It is so easy to wish our garden looks like someone else’s. We are all individual flowers. This is good because we all have made our own mark on the world. God considers us all equal, but different (so special) as individuals. We are created in His image (Genesis 1:27).

You can either read the passage below or open your Bible to Isaiah 40. We will be starting in verse 3 and ending in verse 8. Everything in blue is my “annotations.”

3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.

Verses 3 & 4 remind me of Genesis 1 & 2 when God created the heavens and the earth. It also reminds me of this verse: Matthew 17:20– He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Nothing is impossible with the help of God! After all, he can move mountains!

5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

6 A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.

7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.

We are like grass and flowers. God guides us through the pastures of life- “the breath of the Lord blows”.

8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

Although we die (like grass and flowers), “the word of our God endures forever”. Once we die, it is not the end for us. We move on to live with God in Heaven. That is if we follow this verse: Romans 10:9- “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Verse of the day:

“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Hebrews 12:15
